Hand Painted Mug
This is no ordinary mug: much bigger in size than mass-produced pieces and lovingly covered by intricate Tunisian designs, it has potential to become much more than your go-to hot drink vessel! Display it as your kitchen’s art statement or add a small flower and use it as a mini vase.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
Artisan Organization: Le Souk Ceramique
This mug comes from Nabeul, a city on the Mediterranean coast of northeastern Tunisia and the center of Tunisian pottery. Many of the artisans who hand painted the mug have been working for Le Souk for years and their collaborative process has become a familiar dance.
The creation went something like this: Mokhtar manned the potter’s wheel, and Hichem painted the top and bottom lines of the mug and set the outline. Riadh then painted the honeycomb/seashell design, and Zouhaira and her teammates Olfa and Faten took turns adding in the dots of color. Finally, Ahmed painted the rim’s black border and Noureddine dunked the mug into a glaze to finish it.
